Are you thinking of investing in a responsive web design for your business website? If so, you’re definitely make a fantastic decision. Google recently announced its plans to release a new mobile search algorithm on 21st April 2015, which is designed to boost the rankings of mobile friendly websites.
The new mobile search algorithm comes as no surprise, with Google dropping hints that it was on the cards for a good few months. Late last year the search engine began adding ‘mobile friendly’ tags to its mobile search results. It also launched a new tool where webmasters could check how mobile friendly their websites are, both signs that the search engine would soon be considering mobile experience as a ranking factor.
The new mobile search algorithm has been designed to boost the rankings of mobile friendly websites on a page-by-page basis. This means that only pages of your website that have been optimised for mobile viewing will experience elevated rankings. Google has also said that it will be using the algorithm in real time. By this we assume that it means that as soon as Google crawls a site that it deems mobile friendly, it will immediately receive ranking benefits.
Whilst many people have been speculating over whether or not Google would be penalising non-mobile friendly websites with its new algorithm, it doesn’t seem likely. Rather than punishing websites that aren’t mobile friendly, the new algorithm will be focusing on celebrating and promoting websites that offer a great mobile user experience. So if you don’t have a website design which is mobile friendly, you’re not necessarily going to be penalised but you won’t receive ranking benefits in mobile searches either.
Although the 21st April is more of a launch date for the new algorithm rather than a deadline for webmasters to optimise their sites by, it is still recommended that you make your website mobile friendly as soon as possible. After all, the sooner you do it, the more likely you are to achieve higher rankings and increased traffic levels.
